The new black... Philip Treacy's show sparks colour on the catwalk debate

When Philip Treacy sent out an all-black team of models he sparked a debate about colour on the catwalk. So why isn’t fashion more diverse, asks Jasmine Gardner.

It may have featured Lady Gaga with her face in floral swaddling and Jourdan Dunn in a trombone-mouth headpiece but at milliner Philip Treacy’s London Fashion Week show thoughts were not entirely on the hats.

There are two big issues that dog the fashion industry, one of them weight and the other race, and as model after model strode down Treacy’s runway — every one of them of black heritage — he determined which of the two would be the on-trend debate for London Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2013 season.
“The show was a homage to the African woman and their sensibility to dress up,” says Treacy as his only explanation of the choice to use solely black women in his show.
He is a middle-aged white man whose most memorable recent moment was outfitting the heads of guests at last year’s royal wedding — including Princess Beatrice with her beige “pretzel”.
